1 What is/are the primary reason(s) for you to make work in the first
place?
I enjoy it.
2 What do you intend your work to convey to an audience?
Nothing really! They are just an expression of some of the problems that
I feel in making paintings, and also hopefully a quite playful attempt
to juggle the different visual hierarchies that exist today.
3 Why do you work in your chosen medium and format?
I like the flat, gestureless 'all overness' that the airbrush produces.
As a lot of my work is taking references from advertising and fantasy as
well as fine art it also seems appropriate in that context.
4 Technically speaking how do you go about constructing your work,
that is the image or object itself? What devices do you employ?
I start with an photograph. This can be either a 'normal' photo or one
that has been created or played with on the computer. Once I am happy
with the image I project a 35mm slide of it onto the canvas and quite
loosely mark out the different areas of colour. The painting is then
made using an enlargement of the image for colour references etc.
5 Which period(s)/artists/specific works of art are you influenced by
and how directly? How does this manifest in your work?
At the moment I have been doing work inspired by rococo painting; in the
past Ingres has also been a big influence. Perhaps Pre-Raphaelites as
well. In most of my work it is important there is referencing to earlier
artists and works.
6 What stimulates/informs your work from the world around you?
Advertising, fantasy art, cartoons, fairground art, pin-up art, fine art
7 What stimulates/informs your work from your own personal
experience?
Before I did any fine art I was a graffiti artist so maybe that; perhaps
a liking for the bright and the brash! Graffiti also teaches you to not
be too precious about your work and gives you a bit of a thick skin as
so many people dislike it.
8 From where do you derive your other visual source material (i.e.
non art historical) and how do you implement this material within your
work?
A lot of it is from popular culture and modern 'folk' arts such as
fantasy art, fairgrounds and car customising etc. I would like my work
to have quite a broad range of references in it - to be readable at
different levels depending on how far you want to go. I like the idea of
'playing dumb'.
9 What are the main problems that you face in making your work?
They take quite a long time and the airbrush keeps clogging!
10 Where do you intend to take your work from here?
I'm not sure. I have some ideas floating around. |
