Zavier Ellis
Zavier Ellis was born in Windsor in 1973. He read History of Modern Art at Manchester University (1993-1996) before undertaking a Masters in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London Art School (2003-2005).
Zavier is the founder and director of CHARLIE SMITH LONDON, a vibrant curatorial gallery project that specialises in showing and representing emerging to mid-career artists. He also curates an annual exhibition called Young Gods, which is his personal selection of London graduates. Zavier has curated exhibitions internationally including Berlin, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Klaipėda, London, Los Angeles, Naples and Rome; and continues to place work in notable collections globally. Known as an acute talent spotter Zavier has identified and exhibited a number of important young artists directly from Art College who have gone on to considerable success with galleries, museums and collectors.
Zavier also collects and maintains a studio practice, and as such has exhibited at Museum der Moderne, Salzburg; Saatchi Gallery, London; Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles; Klaipėda Culture Communication Centre, Klaipėda; Royal West Academy, Bristol; Dean Clough, Halifax; Paul Stolper, London; Galerie Heike Strelow, Frankfurt; Raid Projects, Los Angeles; and ENIA Gallery, Pireas. His work is featured in prominent private collections including the seminal Sammlung Annette und Peter Nobel, Zurich..
Simon Rumley
Before THE FUTURE CAN WAIT, Simon Rumley founded the auspicious New London Kicks in 2005. An annual exhibition sponsored by The Armory Show, New London Kicks promoted British contemporary and emerging artists in New York in collaboration with Soho House NY and Wooster Projects. Showcasing breaking talent such as Tessa Farmer, Gordon Cheung, Stella Vine and Katy Moran, Simon subsequently co-founded THE FUTURE CAN WAIT with Zavier Ellis which led to curating shows as far afield as Los Angeles, Rome, Naples and Berlin.
Simon is also one of the UK's leading independent film directors. His films have premiered at Rotterdam, SXSW and Toronto and have won almost 50 prizes globally.
Mission
Established in 2007, THE FUTURE CAN WAIT was a direct response to Zavier Ellis' and Simon Rumley's fifteen years’ experience of the London art scene. Having discovered, curated and collected many of the most exciting young and progressive artists during this period, both Ellis and Rumley became known for identifying rising talent early.
THE FUTURE CAN WAIT was an independent, multi-disciplinary survey project consisting of predominantly London based or educated artists who work in painting, drawing, video, photography, sculpture, performance and installation. Conceived to compliment and complete London's Frieze week, THE FUTURE CAN WAIT took place every October for 10 years in monumental locations up to 26,000 sq. ft., including the Old Truman Brewery; Shoreditch Town Hall; and Victoria House, Bloomsbury Square. Between 2011 and 2014 THE FUTURE CAN WAIT was organised by invitation in partnership with Saatchi’s New Sensations.
Having featured over 150 artists, placing many with prominent collectors globally as well as providing exhibition opportunities with international galleries, Ellis and Rumley decided to retire the project after an incredible 10 years. They ended production by co-curating a typically ambitious charity event with Kiera Bennett, Alex Gene Morrison and Reece Jones called ‘In Memoriam Francesca Lowe’ in 2017. The one-day exhibition and auction at the Old Truman Brewery raised significant funds and featured over 50 artists from THE FUTURE CAN WAIT programme alongside artists including Matt Calderwood, Andrew Grassie, Anne Hardy, Marcus Harvey, Chantal Joffe, Polly Morgan, Noble & Webster, Julian Opie, Mark Wallinger, Jonathan Wateridge and Jonathan Yeo.
