1 What is/are the primary reason(s) for you to make work in the first place?
To make humans love each other more.
2 What do you intend your work to convey to an audience?
A sense of being alive.
3 Why do you work in your chosen medium and format?
It has become my primary language of expression.
4 Technically speaking how do you go about constructing your work, that is the image or object itself? What devices do you employ?
It’s like a cloud of ether slowly taking form as the disparate elements are pulled together….
5 Which period(s)/artists/specific works of art are you influenced by and how directly? How does this manifest in your work?
I am very interested in the early northern renaissance and in particular Patenirs’ ‘World landscape’ as a model for contemporary reinvention.
6 What stimulates/informs your work from the world around you?
Travelling is great but I don’t get away enough for this to have much of an impact so perhaps the desire to see more of the world becomes the fuel for a fantastical world view which in turn is realised through the act of painting.
7 What stimulates/informs your work from your own personal experience?
It’s personal. ; )
8 From where do you derive your other visual source material (i.e. non art historical) and how do you implement this material within your work?
Often the starting point for a painting is born from images conjured through literature, more particularly myths and legends. Films can often stimulate ideas in a similar way.
9 What are the main problems that you face in making your work?
I try to keep my practice open ended so I am always at a cross roads. The problems are the questions which become the driving force to keep painting.
10 Where do you intend to take your work from here?
I really couldn’t say. |
