Situated between an embrace of vulgarity in contemporary culture, and a yearning for a lost mode of figuration in painting, my work establishes a place of intersection between the sublime possibilities of painting, and the closed, crude nature of pornography. I choose subjects of such seemingly opposing values so as to create a tension between appearance and sign; to deliberately distort the viewer’s gaze so it translates from subjective to objective and to simultaneously implicate the viewer so that he or she also becomes both object and subject, thereby creating a game of ‘who is watching whom?’.
